Running your first influencer campaign: a no-fluff guide
A step-by-step playbook for brands launching their first creator campaign in India — from goal-setting to measuring what actually mattered.
Start with one number
Before you talk to a single creator, decide the one metric this campaign exists to move. Installs? Website visits? Saves on a launch? Trial signups? Pick one. A campaign optimising for everything optimises for nothing.
Everything downstream — creator choice, brief, content, measurement — flows from that number.
Step 1: Set the goal and the guardrails
Write down the goal, the budget, the timeline and the non-negotiables (claims you can't make, competitors to avoid, brand-safety lines). One page. This is the document every creator and every piece of content gets checked against.
Step 2: Choose creators by fit, not fame
Shortlist by audience match and engagement, not follower count. Look at the comments, not just the likes — are real people responding, or is it bots and emojis? For a first campaign, a cluster of well-matched micro creators de-risks you far more than one big name.
Step 3: Brief for the hook, not the script
The best creators know their audience better than you do. Give them the goal, the must-says and the must-not-says — then let them write in their own voice. Over-scripted content reads as an ad and dies in the feed. Brief the what; trust them on the how.
Step 4: Build in testing
Don't launch one video. Launch several hooks across several creators, run a slice as paid, and watch which combinations earn attention cheaply. This is the difference between hoping and knowing.
Step 5: Measure what you set out to move
Come back to that one number. Vanity metrics — views, follower bumps — are nice, but the campaign succeeds or fails on the goal you chose in step one. Track it, attribute it as cleanly as you can, and write down what you learned.
Step 6: Iterate
The first campaign is a data-gathering exercise as much as a marketing one. Keep the winning hooks, retire the losers, and the second campaign starts from a real baseline instead of a guess.
That loop — goal, fit, brief, test, measure, iterate — is the entire discipline. Run it honestly and your first campaign becomes the foundation for every one after it.
